The Compassionate, Mournful Voice Of Richie Havens

Richie Havens was at the peak of popularity during a time that seemed so full of possibility; when nobody had to ask what was so funny about peace love and understanding. A huge fierce gentle vulnerable booming voice. Listen to his version of "Just Like A Woman" - he takes Dylan's sneering put-down and transforms it into an empathetic lament. Every song is interpreted through that filter of deeply felt emotion. It's a compliment to say he probably wouldn't have made it big in today's market.

Distinctive folk singer Richie Havens recorded three albums before he hit the charts in 1968 with Something Else Again, but it was his appearance at the Woodstock festival in 1969 that enormously benefited his career. Havens' first album after that exposure, Alarm Clock, made the Top 30 and produced a Top 20 single in "Here Comes the Sun." He became an international touring success and, by the end of the '70s, had abandoned recording, turning entirely to live work. Simple Things ended Havens' studio...
