The Frames frontman Glen Hansard conceptualized an indie film that perfectly captured the struggle of the street busking musician (played by Hansard) and the magic moments that occur within a musical chemistry when a man and a woman discover that their vocal harmonies can braid together so closely as to birth a third voice. The swooning opener "Falling Slowly" became the hit of the soundtrack, and rightfully so.
There's something that millions of dollars, the finest - most beautiful actors, the fanciest camera work and the experienced aural work of a top hollywood composer/soundtrack supervisor can't buy - and that's emotion. And authenticity. And beauty. Virtually everything contained within the film "Once" and it's accompanying soundtrack speak to all that filmmakers and Hollywood should aspire. From the heatbreaking "The Hill", the wrenching "Lies," to the haunting "If you want me" to the would-be-billboard-hit-in-a-perfect-world "Falling Slowly," every song both contributes to the plot of the film, to the structure of the story and to the emotions felt by both the characters and individuals lucky enough to experience this great cinematic achievement. Sounds simple doesn't it? But it's all too rare. I can't recommend this movie and soundtrack enough.
This is one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard. I have yet to see the film due to the fact that it is only in limited release at the moment, but when it is in wider release, I will see it immediately. The songs, "Falling Slowly," "When Your Mind's Made Up," and "Leave" are truly the standouts, but every single song seems to blend together seamlessly telling a unique love story. This is the movie soundtrack of the year! No doubt about it.
I've stalked this movie to two film festivals and been to see Glen Hansard perform with The Frames, and I still can't get enough. A bittersweet love story told in perfect moments of song and awkward chemistry. Funny, sadder than hell, and a clinking glass to your life's own "what if", and you know you have one. Go see it wherever you can, for crying out loud, and buy this soundtrack, posthaste.
