iTunes Review

Lou Reed's gift for narrative finds a worthy subject in late-'80s New York City. Whether he's paying tribute to Andy Warhol on "Dime Store Mystery," chronicling the horror of AIDS for "Halloween Parade," or running down the impossibly ludicrous world surrounding him on "Strawman," Reed applies a consistent pressure to the songs; it gives them a surprisingly balanced approach despite the emotionally charged territory. It isn't until "There Is No Time" that one feels the ticking time bomb of potential human misery catching up with Reed's resolute coolness. He and guitarist Mike Rathke form a delicate brotherhood as the sound evokes dirty-yet-clean, streetwise rock 'n' roll on "Dirty Blvd", and the perfect portrait "Romeo Had Juliette," where Reed achieves a masterful musical and lyrical rhythm. There's a barbed wit and assuring empathy to "Last Great American Whale," while "Busload of Faith" acknowledges the daily struggle faced by Reed's urban neighbors. It isn't worth much to the tourist trade, but New York offers honest insight to the complexities of modern life in the Big Apple.

if this happened to be the first Lou Reed album you listen...

*1995* I was 17 and vinyl records were a thing of the past. I thumb threw my dad's records in a old Peaches wooden crate. I placed the vinvyl on the turntable. Wait a few seconds , hiss.. pop,... hiss.... My first Lou Reed experience! Its like he's talking and singing at the same time... weird. Some people might give this a poor rating but to me.. this is Lou Reed. Protest album & a sign of the times. This album set my musical taste henchforth of everything I listen to today. Great Stuff!!

One of the great albums if the 80's. A masterpiece of political and social commentary whether or you agree or nit with Reed's positions.

The career of Lou Reed defied capsule summarization. Like David Bowie (whom Reed directly inspired in many ways), he made over his image many times, mutating from theatrical glam rocker to strung-out junkie to avant-garde noiseman to straight rock & roller to your average guy. Few would deny Reed's immense importance and considerable achievements. As has often been written, he expanded the vocabulary of rock & roll lyrics into the previously forbidden territory of kinky sex, drug use (and...
