Album Review

This recording features an early version of altoist Phil Woods' Quintet, the second of two albums that includes guitarist Harry Leahey. With pianist Mike Melillo, bassist Steve Gilmore and drummer Bill Goodwin completing the group, the Woods band's sound and musical philosophy were very much in place. The great altoist performs a few boppish tunes, some group originals (two songs by Melillo) and a couple of ballads. Highlights of the lesser-known but worthy recording include "Nuages," "Change Partners" and a cooking version of "Shaw Nuff."

Phil Woods=My hero

This album truly represents Phil Woods personality as expressed through the horn. He plays with such precision and care, and yet when it comes to the cadenzas, he's not afraid to play a comical riff or something that shows the lighter side of things. I truly appreciated Song for Sisyphus and Change Partners, not to say the other songs were any less tasteful. Overall this album is a work of art that is a perfect example of what the alto is capable of, and then some.
