Album Review

Ickes' dobro guitar technique is only outdone by his excellent choice of music on this disc. Bright originals like "Dwight's Blues" are nicely complemented by covers like Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man." The mix of country and western twang with jazz swing is irresistible. It doesn't hurt that Ickes is joined here by other fine musicians, such as John R. Burr on piano, Derek Jones on bass and Joe Craven on mandolin. Even with folk, bop, swing and bluegrass flavors in the mix, the whole thing sticks together with a cohesive sound and spirit.

What a righteous yet unexpected instrument of jazz

I had never heard such an application of dobro such as this. Only two situationally weak songs on the album: "Can't Find My Way Back Home" & "California Blues" The rest flows like a thematic dream, leaving you with a strong replay desire. Piano, Bass and Dobro. Mark my words and judge this album's worth.

feel the mojo

absolutely awesome...especially hancock's watermelon man and dwights blues. a really tight band when they have IT going on!!!!!!, also great music during arthroscopic surgery, as the bubbles, etc, seen on the screen seem to undulate in time with the music (an ortho thing, i'm sure soneone out there can visualize the meniscus gently flapping, the water dripping on the floor, synovitis swaying.....
