Fans of the movie may be a bit nonplussed to find the soundtrack void of any Hilary Swank or Gerald Butler tunes featured in the film. That is until the first few acoustic notes of The Pogues' "Love You 'Till The End" pipe out of your speakers: a perfect way to start a romantically themed collection. Shane MacGowan and company gives way to a piano-heavy serenade that falls back on a bed of cellos, viola, and fiddles, foregoing the Pogues’ signature swashbuckling dipsomaniac sound. Not to worry, though, because Pogues protégés Flogging Molly make up for it with the kind of tipsy Irish folk tune that would also go well with slugging a bottle of booze from inside a ramshackle country pub. Most of the other songs here abound in lovey-dovey vibes and soft-rocking moods to blend cohesively in the ideal Valentine's Day mix tape or anniversary present. James Blunt's "Same Mistake" is a standout, with lilting piano and gentle falsettos sounding like a lost Maurice Gibb track. Looped beats, acoustic arpeggios and ambient noise all contrast nicely under Chuck Prophet's weathered voice on "No Other Love," but it's Nellie McKay's sweet little ukulele-accompanied title track that takes the cake.
I Saw The Movie...
and I cried through the entire thing. These songs on this album drive the story, and when I hear them by themselves, I cry, because they remind me of a particular scene in the movie. Here is what I would rate each song: Love You 'Till the End- 5/10 I really don't like this song much, but in the movie when Holly sings it, it's heart-wrenching. Same Mistake- 8/10 This song makes me think of all the times I say I wont do something again, and then I do. More Time- 10/10 This is the BEST song. It makes me think of how things don't always go the way you plan it, and even if you're not okay with it, it doesn't matter. Carousel- 9/10 This song is just fun. It makes me smile and just want to dance. A surprise in this album. Fortress- 7/10 I love this song, because it reminds me of the love that the characters in the movie shared, and how it made them stronger. Last Train Home- 9/10 This song reminds me of the letters that Gerry sends Holly. Rewind- 6/10 Rewind makes me think of how Holly is so lost after Gerry dies. Sad. My Sweet Song- 8/10 This song always gets to me, because it saying that the singer is having such a hard time getting over the love she had, and then lost. No Other Love- 3/10 This is a key song in the movie, but I just don't like this guy's voice. Everything We Had- 7/10 This is a great song, sort of a memoir of all the good times you had, and how you know there wont be anymore like that. In the Beginning- 5/10 This is a slow song, which makes me think of how things start out in a relationship, and then decline if you don't pay close attention. If I Ever Leave This World Alive- 8/10 This song is a sort of a hollow promise song. Saying if I ever leave this world alive I'll... But you know they wont leave the world alive. P.S. I Love You- 6/10 This song is just sad. In the movie this song is a sort of reminder of the letters Holly is recieving from Gerry. Kisses and Cake- 6/10 This song begins sad, but starts to sound hopeful. It reminds me of the way some people grieve.
So Ive wanted to see this movie for a few months now I bought the book and loved it And the fact Gerard Butler is in it makes it even more amazing So when I heard the soundtrack was out, checking it out was a must Then I saw all these reviews for Last Train Home and I was like no song can be that good.
