Album Review

James Horner's score for The Spiderwick Chronicles is suitably dramatic, if not particularly inspired. It seems odd that the composer who also provided the evocative score for Titanic wouldn't use the opportunity of a children's fantasy film to create at least one memorable theme, but that seems to be the case here — unlike similar scores (John Williams' iconic music for the Harry Potter series comes to mind), there are no recurring movements on The Spiderwick Chronicles that signal or symbolize characters and plot twists. Despite its resemblance to some of Williams' more whimsical works, the score ends up feeling restrained and unable to keep up with the adventurous plot it's meant to accompany. The Spiderwick Chronicles sounds fine, but there isn't much heart in it.

Some beautiful stuff here!

It feels like Horner is getting original again. I'm not crazy about the kooky boom-chick-boom-chick children's movie-type cues on here, but there's some truly beautiful epic stuff going on, especially in the last two cues, 14 and 15... Horner takes us to new places without employing his usual Horner-isms, and the result is some spectacular score.

Horner's creative "vision" comes to life

like his "Field of Dreams" soundtrack, Horner built a magical soundtrack and if you build it we will listen! This piece of work brings the imagery to life. Also check out James Horner's brilliant opening theme on The CBS Evening News.

Thank God it's Horner!

I have been waiting for Horner to return to the children film genre for a long time and this soundtracks doesn't disappoint one bit. kind of like his score to field of dreams and casper mixed together.
