Jypsi

Jypsi

Bands like Little Big Town, Lady Antebellum, Halfway To Hazard, Sugarland, etc. all have varying degrees of summery, '70s inspired, classic rock in their sound, and Nashville's Jypsi are riding shotgun on the bandwagon. But their self titled debut has something that the aforementioned don't — sibling harmonies. Lillie Mae, Scarlett, Amber-Dawn, and Frank Rische comprise the quartet and they possess the next-of-kin harmonies that can not be faked by people or computers. Just listen to the acapella break on "You Don't Know What Real Love Is." Only heavenly layers of vocals like theirs can make a subject as depressing as an emotionally stunted lover sound so easy on the ears. "I Don't Love You Like That" is another standout that contrasts lilting melodies with lovelorn lyrics and female voices that braid together like gold strands. These voices help brother Frank out on "Stray Dogs and Alley Cats." It's not that his voice is bad, but beside his siren sisters, he sounds like an everyday subway busker. And if some songs remind you of The Dixie Chicks, that's because their former producer Blake Chancey mixed this fine debut.
