iTunes Review

Chris Sligh faced the judges on American Idol’s sixth season armed with an outstanding voice and a whole lot of attitude. He didn’t win, but did manage to impress a vast TV audience along the way. Running Back to You finds him swimming comfortably in the Christian music mainstream, offering confessions and hosannas with unaffected fervor. Sligh’s purity of tone and sure feel for dynamics grab the listener immediately — from the anthemic “Arise” onwards, he sounds fully energized and engaged. Much of the album veers towards worship music, with “Cry Tonight,” “Love is Raining Down,” and “Empty Me” standing out as unfettered declarations of belief. “Potential” (a meditation on growing older set to a pulsating track) and “Vessel” (intimately sung with guitar and string accompaniment) draw something personal out of familiar Christian themes. Small details — such as Sligh’s soulful falsetto vocals on the baroque-tinged “Loaded Gun” — give this album a distinctive character. Producer Brown Bannister takes an effectively versatile approach here, adding hard rock grit to “Something Beautiful” and power-pop glide to “Waiting for You.”

Is that necessary?

OK, I know that many people are checking out this album because they are fans of American Idol and not of Christian music in general. Does this give you the right to say things like '...Christians like anything that glorifies their cause' and '...aliened himself with the Dark Lords'? That is childish at best. There is more to music than 'the beat'. There is complexity and genius to how Chris mixes his rhythms and lyrics. Just because it is not your style does not make it bad music. You don't have to buy it, you don't have to like it and you don't have to slander those that do. Let's keep comments more mature please. You don't see Christians going onto non-Christian artists comment page and making inappropriate comments do you? Thank you

Did not disappoint!

"Running Back To You" is a great album! I am so glad that Chris went into Christian music. I told my wife when we heard his audition performance on AI that he was going to win. I suppose I was wrong, but I guess God knew what He was doing when Chris didn't win. He would have been tied down to a contract with whoever AI wanted him to be with and making their music, not music about Jesus. The song Vessel really hits home with me... Keep up the good work and come to Montgomery, AL for a concert soon Chris!

Best New Album this year

Chris Sligh received his big break during the sixth season of American Idol, where his self-deprecating humor and tenor vocals earned him a tenth-place finish. He parlayed that success into a CCM career, first with the band Half Past Forever (which Sligh had formed prior to the American Idol season) and later as a solo act. Born into a Baptist household in 1978, Charles Christopher Sligh developed his faith and singing ability at a young age. His parents were missionaries whose work required the...
