Hot Smoke

Hot Smoke

Often upstaged by The 13th Floor Elevators (both psychedelic groups were from Austin, Texas, and both were signed to International Artists), Bubble Puppy charted higher, landing a No. 14 U.S. hit with its hard-rocking 1968 acid-rock hit “Hot Smoke and Sassafras.” Hot Smoke boasts four previously unreleased songs, including “Grand Illusion” (which sounds like a heavier Buffalo Springfield) and the sludgy, bluesy “Methedrine Blues.” Echoes of early Blue Cheer blast from “Hard Livin’,” another rare bonus cut that grooves heavy on a swampy, boot-stomping rhythm.
