Editors’ Notes

Brighten the Corners was released in 1997 and its status in the Pavement catalog has been debated ever since among its rabid fans who revise their opinions on a regular basis. So why shouldn’t the band also revise its output? “Shady Lane” and “Date With IKEA” are the immediate “hits,” fueled by compact hooks and melodies. “Stereo” meanders nicely with singer Stephen Malkmus leisurely asking his stream-of-consciousness questions. However, this expanded edition creates an entirely new album. The b-side “And Then (The Hexx)” is presented here in its original unedited seven-minute version that was initially intended to be the album’s opening cut. Other highlights include the band’s take on Echo and the Bunnymen’s “The Killing Moon” and the three previously unreleased tracks from that BBC session (including another take on “And Then (The Hexx)”), live versions of “Date With IKEA” and “Fin” and b-sides such as “Westy Can Drum” and a previously unreleased vocal take version of “Birds In the Majic Industry.”

Customer Reviews

5 stars for content/2 stars for DELUXE Price!

I've been into this album for the last 10 years or so and really appreciate all of Matador's Pavement re-releases/Deluxe versions. The added content serves a completist well and I'd venture to guess that a casual fan might even dig some of the added songs as well. A great album already, pushed to the gills with extra b-sides/alt. mixes/etc. My only concern is the DELUXE Price Tag here on iTunes? $19.99 is the retail 2CD price (i.e. the Borders price (for s..t sakes). Slackers appreciate discounts and this does not translate into one of them.

pavement before cake, etc.

for the record, pavement was making recordings in the late 80s.

That is all.

Years Active: '80s, '90s

With their fractured songs, unexpected blasts of feedback, laconic vocals, cryptic literate lyrics, and defiant low-fidelity, Pavement were one of the most influential and distinctive bands to emerge from the American underground in the '90s. Pavement, along with Sebadoh, were the leaders of the lo-fi movement that dominated U.S. indie rock in the early '90s. Initially conceived as a studio project between guitarists/vocalists Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg in the '80s, Pavement gradually became...
