iTunes Review

Since 2000, Animal Collective has combined far-flung elements — Beach Boys-influenced vocals, ambient textures, bursts of noise, folky singalongs, psychedelic explorations — into a unique sound that is both experimental and melody loving. Merriweather Post Pavilion, their ninth full-length, is a breakthrough. The group — Avey Tare (David Portner), Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), and Brian Weitz (Geologist) — have created their poppiest work yet, and it sounds great. In the mid-‘80s, Sonic Youth started to shape their overtone-filled textures into potent songs, and on Merriweather, Animal Collective pulls off a similar coup. The desire for familial domesticity never sounded as ecstatic as it does on “My Girls.” (And who knew a line like “I just want four walls and adobe slats for my girls” could be so catchy?) “Also Frightened” evokes ‘60s psych filtered through the band’s 21st-century sensibility, while “Bluish” is a mellow slice of phase-shifted bliss etched with details that play off the lead vocal in winsome ways. On the closer, “Brother Sport,” the group layers vocals and percussion with delirious glee: it’s a great send-off for a joyful album.

Customer Reviews

Holy Lord.

Okay. Imagine sitting back in the day with none other than the Buddha himself. The two of you are discussing life, love, and various other zen things. Then, all of a sudden a man approaches you both offering some fresh Indian rice. When the rice is finished cooking, you realize, "Oh my lord. I forgot my soy-sauce back in the future!" The Buddha tells you to calm down and he smiles and reaches into his woven napsack and pulls out his own personal bottle. You graciously accept his gift, and soon enough your stomach is full of a delicious medly of flavors and such. You lean back, completely content. A wide smile stretches across your face. That's what this album is like.

Easy Nomination for Best Album of 2009

I've seen them live. I've listened to them from the beginning. I've felt internally conflicted about recent trends. But this is Avey Tare's, Panda Bear's and the Geologist's masterpiece. This is not to say that they are not capable of reaching new heights, but it is to firmly state that this is the best ever. It's not often that we get such an intimiate album so late in the career of geniuses, but this is phenomenal.

Whatever You Do This Year Don't Ignore This!

If you are looking for an album that is intelligent, meaningful, dazzling, and quite danceable, then I doubt you are going to find a better album all year then this masterpiece. There is not a single song on this album that doesn’t make you think and smile at the same time, while nodding your head till it comes off. However of you are cheap, then some songs that are strong enough to be on their own include “My Girls”, Summertime Clothes”, and “Taste”. P.S try looking hard at the cover, you will notice that everything seems to be moving; it pretty much sums up the whole feeling of the album.

Animal Collective were formed in Baltimore County, Maryland, by longtime friends and musical collaborators Avey Tare (David Portner), Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), Deakin (Josh Dibb), and Geologist (Brian Weitz).
