Album Review

On their major-label debut, Under the Table and Dreaming, the Dave Matthews Band is helped by the lean production of Steve Lillywhite, who manages to rein in the group's tendency to meander. The result is a set of eclectic pop/rock that is accentuated by bursts of instrumental virtuosity instead of being ruled by it. That also means that the Dave Matthews Band is capable of turning out pop songs, and as the hit single "What Would You Say" and "Ants Marching" illustrate, they have a flair for catchy hooks.

4th Review? Really?!?

If you're downloading this, I'm guessing you're finally replacing that scratched cd that you found in the back seat a couple months ago... Right? If you haven't previously owned this album before, you're about to become way more enlightened than your silly friends who are stuck on Panic at the Disco, 50 Cent, and who ever Travis Barker is with these days. This is a mid-90's classic from one of the biggest "underground" bands ever. When guys were were trying to act tough, rock out, or whatever it was they did back then, they'd listen to Pearl Jam, Nirvana, etc... This epic album came out at the climax of the "grunge" movement. But, you won't find much, if any of that disgruntled/rainyday-Seattle influence here. No. Sure, Dave gets mad. But, it's in a much more refined, poetic way than the grunge guys did it. If you're under 25, this album was purchased by and listened to by the girls who wouldn't pay attention to the "grunge" boys and by the guys who appreciated musical virtuosity. That's right... Anyways, I could write a million paragraphs on this album and the cultural impacts it secretly had on mid-90's culture, but I suggest you experience it for yourself. Then, I envite you to write a review about your personal journey. 4th Review? Really?!?

Formed: 1991 in Charlottesville, VA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Formed in the early '90s by South African vocalist/guitarist Dave Matthews, the Dave Matthews Band presented a more pop-oriented version of the Grateful Dead crossed with elements of jazz, funk, and the worldbeat explorations of Paul Simon and Sting. Matthews populated the group with several Virginia-based musicians — bassist Stefan Lessard, saxophonist Leroi Moore, violinist Boyd Tinsley, drummer Carter Beauford, and short-lived keyboardist Peter Griesar — and the band built up a strong...
