iTunes Review

Between 1972 and 1980 Donald Fagen and Walter Becker had one of the most spectacularly unusual winning streaks in modern pop history, and Citizen Steely Dan collects the entire run. Steely Dan started the ‘70s as long-haired stoners and ended the decade as jazz-pop ironists, but through it all their music retained its essential qualities. Above all, these songs are exemplars of the art of studio recording. No other pop band has paid such attention to the details of its sound design, and “Do It Again,” “Hey Nineteen” and “Black Cow” are still the standard by which hi-fi systems are tested. Then there’s Fagen and Becker’s impeccable taste in collaborators, and their unerring determination to seamlessly blend elements of jazz, rock and pure pop music. Ultimately, what really sets Dan apart from dozens of ‘70s soundalikes is the lyrical content. These songs are peculiar snapshots of modern life, filled with strange characters, bizarre food and drink, and exotic, often seedy, locales. They can be dark and cerebral but because the music is so warm and well crafted, it goes down like Scotch spiked with maple syrup. Sixty-six pieces and not a dud in sight — few have ever had a better run.

Easily one of the best albums of all time

I bought this the day it was released. For any Steely Dan, rock, or even music fan, this is an essential album to have in your collection.

It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This!

This is argueably(maybe) the greatest box set ever released. Sixty six tracks, not one of them is a dog!!!!

iTunes might not like this, but you HAVE to get the actual box set. The book that comes with it is full of stuff that is rather interesting. If you just want some of the best music around (Donald Fagen and Walter Becker have indeed made some of the best music out there...not to mention getting the BEST studio guys to work with) then download this box set! You will NOT be disappointed. Unless of course you think Britney Spears is the height of musical genius.

Most rock & roll bands are a tightly wound unit that developed their music through years of playing in garages and clubs around their hometown. Steely Dan never subscribed to that aesthetic. As the vehicle for the songwriting of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, Steely Dan defied all rock & roll conventions. Becker and Fagen never truly enjoyed rock -- with their ironic humor and cryptic lyrics, their eclectic body of work shows some debt to Bob Dylan -- preferring jazz, traditional pop, blues, and...
