Editors’ Notes

For album number two, Brit singer-songwriter Jack Penate teamed up with Bloc Party producer Paul Epworth in his west London home studio and began a sonic transformation that attempts “lo-fi soul,” and whatever paradoxes and contradictions that might conjure up. Penate’s a skilled singer, so he can slink past the synth patches and silky rhythmic tumbles with grace and ease. With nine tracks coming in at three to four minutes, Penate’s an economical guest who understands how to ignite the ghosts of Brit-pop and Philly Soul without owing much to either in the transaction. “Pull My Heart Away” sets the tone, the vocals hiding behind reverb and mechanical beats. “Be the One” establishes greater stage presence with Penate taking charge and sending the disco beats to the backstage while the loopy back-up vocals mock and tease. By “Tonight’s Today,” Penate’s even goofing on his own vocals, twisting into mock falsetto before joining the back-up choir for a culture-jam of world beat and budget-lined techno.

Customer Reviews

Breath in...Breath out...

I feel as though I may be writing this review a bit pre-mature. I just purchased the album and have barely made it through all of the tracks, yet, I can't help myself. Its as though I've literally taken a breath of fresh air. The lyrics are meaningful, the music is pure, but overall its the initial feeling I have as the sound waves enter my ear. So fresh and new. (Coming from an untrained ear to British pop/rock.) I heard "Tonight's Today" on Minnesota Public Radio/The Current and couldn't help but go investigate. What I found is a young new artist who has incredible talent and a refreshing sound that, at the moment, I can't get enough of. So dive in...close your eyes...listen...take a deep breath and feel the refreshing sound of Jack Penate.

world class

i have hundreds of songs from every genre itunes has to offer so i know when i hear good music or not. THIS IS GOOD MUSIC!!!!!! not over done, smooth meaningful lyrics, and overall its an album that we all will be hearing about in the near future. bet on it!!! "Pull my heart away" should be a chart topper.....somewhere, and "everything is new" is the albums hidden gem. great buy and worth every penny. For those of you who find this boring and not 'real' music take another listen and if u still dont like it you can go back to your Miley Cyrus or fall out boy cd's.

fantastic album

one of the best albums I have heard in a while... comparable to the voice and songwriting skills of Paolo Nutini

In many ways, Jack Peñate is Lily Allen minus the sarcasm and the party frocks. The South Londoner's music is slick, radio-ready pop, but its heart is rooted in the Two-Tone ska revival and the more soulful end of '80s pop, along the lines of the Style Council and the Housemartins. Add in Peñate's striking vocal resemblance to the young Billy Bragg and he's like the post-millennial equivalent to the U.K. student discos of two decades previously. Jack Fabian Peñate was born in Blackheath, a fairly...
