Editors’ Notes

Saying that the Clientele’s sound is informed by a variety of pop shadings from the ‘60s is like saying the Velvet Underground were sort of cool. Their fourth studio album (its cover art design another nod to decades past) is so steeped in pianos, wispy vocals and winsome harmonies that newcomers to the party may think these guys (and gal) are original Merseybeat hipsters reincarnated. As the Clientele has deepened its commitment to the string-laden, quasi-sunny Brit-pop of nearly five decades ago, they retain their dreamy aesthetic that envelopes the listener in melancholy; “Never Anyone But You” swoons with yearning, and other shimmering jewels, like the gorgeous title track and “Walking In the Park,” are produced with clarity and a polished sheen that becomes them. “I Wonder Who We Are” and “Share the Night” are shaken and stirred with dance beats and disco guitar riffs, and Arthur Lee and Love are evoked on the brilliant “I Know I’ll See Your Face.” Bonfires On the Heath is really one beautiful mood, and the subtle hooks and choruses throughout are almost secondary delights.

Customer Reviews

Bonfires on the Heath

The Clientele return with anothersubtle and melodic album that is soft and sweet on the ears. They hardly break new ground here but fans will love it and if you are new to the band this is another splendid introduction to their rich but mellow sound. I Wonder Who We Are, Jennifer and Julia along with the title track are all blissfully delivered and the supporting cast of songs are magnificently performed too. If you haven't sat back in a dark room and listened to this band yet then do it NOW!

Steady as she goes

I wouldn’t say Bonfires on the Heath is treading any new ground for Clientele, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Sticking with the 60s style jangle pop, sorrowful lyrics and hummable melodies that swim inside your head for days, this is an another assured release. Sublime and haunting in a way few albums are, 10 years from now when I revisit the best music from the first 20 years of the 2000s, Bonfires on the Heath will probably be in the top 10. Or any Clientele record, for that matter.

These guys are just the sickest crunchy band around..

"Graven Wood" is 5 stars and "Never Anyone But You" is 4 stars.

Retrofitted pop band the Clientele had obvious roots in the hazy, autumnal glare of Galaxie 500 and Felt. Just as those bands took their Velvet Underground and Television records to heart without being derivative, the Clientele were able to chalk up an extensive discography riddled with lush melodies of their own without sounding...
