Rough Travel for a Rare Thing (Live)

Bill Callahan’s first live album captures an interesting point in his career, recorded as he was transitioning from his dark, lo-fi work as Smog toward a folkier sound presented under his given name. Rough Travel for a Rare Thing displays Callahan in all of his morbid poignancy, delivering fiddle-laden versions of his classics such as “Held” and “Bathysphere” as well as newer material like the melodic, funky “Diamond Dancer,” making for a wonderfully rootsy set from the utterly idiosyncratic songwriter.
