iTunes Review

For his second solo album, Jakob Dylan further refines his acoustic touch. With Neko Case and Kelly Hogan providing backups and harmonies on eight of the album’s 11 tracks and producer T-Bone Burnett keeping things in a subdued naturalistic setting, Dylan is free to explore the folk roots implicit in the family name. David Mansfield provides fiddle and mandolin, Greg Leisz joins on pedal steel, and horns are added where needed. Front and center is Dylan’s deep and thick voice that’s perfectly pitched to deliver its timeless wisdom on life and love. “Nothing But the Whole Wide World” has the sound of a modern-day folk song. “Down On Our Own Shield” turns towards country. “Lend a Hand” jolts with a Tom Waits graveyard rhythm and shakedown horns. The acoustic bass jumps to the front of the line for the sweet sorrow of “Everybody’s Hurting.” “Truth for a Truth” coasts with drummer Jay Bellerose’s solid drive. The Wallflowers supplied Dylan with mainstream rock appeal; his solo career is establishing him as a formidable folksinger able to stand on his own.

Great songs buried in overwrought bass

Is T-bone turning into the new Babyface? or Timbaland? He's slipping quickly into ego-production where he has to make sure everything sounds like his hand is all over it instead of letting the artists be seen with any clarity. The acoustic bass is mixed so far up front on this record, it could blow out a set of cheap speakers if you're not careful. The biggest problem with that is it tends to neutralize the great melodies on here. I'm really into the songs...surprisingly great lyrics considering young Dylan is a rich kid from LA. He'll never live up to the legend or lyrical standards set by papa Dylan but what I like here is that he's not even trying to do that, but rather just slipping comfortably into some cool narratives. Good job JD.

Something even better this way comes!

I have been a huge fan of the Wallflowers and Jakob Dylan's solo work. This album is different from both his last solo album and anything the Wallflowers did. As always, the lyrics are fantastic. This one is less acoustic than the last. My favorites upon my first listen are Everybody's Hurting and Holy Rollers for Love. Sample a few songs and if you like what you hear, you will not regret your purchase. Thanks again Jakob Dylan.

Its about time! This is the album Jakob needed to make 10 years ago! Capitalize on that country old south voice! It would be hard to live in the shadow of you know who, but this makes the "Billy the Kid" Soundtrack look stupid! Good style and cannot wait to see the concert! Daddy should be proud if not envious of this album. Now if we could just daddy to return to his roots and follow in the footsteps of his son, life would be GOLDEN! Buy this album if you love country, southern rock, deep south folk, and just great Americana!

Being the son of one of the most influential, innovative, eccentric, and unique songwriters in the history of Western pop music probably opened some doors for Jakob Dylan, but being Bob Dylan's son was just as likely a heavy load to carry as well, and the younger Dylan handled the pressure with relative élan. Born in 1969, Jakob Dylan was raised in Los Angeles by his mother, Sara Lowndes, after his parents' divorce in 1977. He studied at private schools in L.A. and New York, and eased into the...
