Album Review

Clocking in at 30 tracks, this is a top-heavy collection of surf sides the Challengers cut for the GNP/Crescendo label. As the group never really had a hit, this is arguably all the Challengers you might ever need for the collection. But it is grade-A surf music, extremely well played with various session ringers like Hal Blaine, Jim Keltner, Steve Douglas, and Paul Johnson brought in on various numbers.

Challengers indeed kill the surf classics...

I am a surf music fan and have just about every album ITunes offers plus much more. My two stars goes to the great classic surf songs included in this album; all 30 songs are some of the greatest surf songs out there. However, this band does a terrible job in recreation of all these surf music classics, their playing has full of errors or modifications that does not make sense. Why not get the great originals rather then settle in these uninspired versions. Pipeline - Chantays, Wedge - Dick Dale, Walk, Don;t Run - Ventures, Rebel Rouser - Duane Eddy, Telstar- Tornadoes . This is a great collection of all classic surf music. But this band is flat and does not do justice to the originals. Some remakes are great, like the acoustic versions by Duotones, but not these...

Bogus Tunes

These are remakes of classic Challengers tunes, not originals. This album was released in '94. To get the real sound of the Challengers check out the albums K-38 and Surfbeat. This album in no way represents the Challengers sound of the early 60's.

What is going on here? These songs are all flat and lifeless, sound like they were re-recorded by amateurs for bingo night at the old-folk's home. Very confusing what Capitol Records was trying to accomplish here...please don't buy any of this. Search out the originals and ignore this garbage.

Formed: 1963 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s

One of the most popular of the early Southern Californian surf bands, the Challengers were formed by drummer Richard Delvy after he left the Bel-Airs, who had recorded one of the very first surf singles, "Mr. Moto." Their debut LP, Surfbeat (early 1963), was one of the very first all-instrumental surf albums and sold 200,000 copies, an astronomical number for a regional act. Recording several albums over the next couple of years, most of their repertoire consisted of covers of popular rock and surf...
