iTunes Review

Dave Barnes blends holiday romance with a splash of nostalgia and a touch of reverence on Very Merry Christmas. The Mississippi-bred singer/songwriter’s soulful style fits comfortably with the mix of new material and familiar favorites included here. For the traditionalists, Barnes offers slow-burning renditions of “I’ll be Home for Christmas,” and “The Christmas Song,” as well as Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” The real core of the album, though, is a batch of Barnes originals that explore the same interconnected themes of love, home and faith that have defined his previous releases. The title track rekindles the glow of family memories as its simmers to a Memphis groove. Barnes turns on his Southern charm in “Meet Me At the Mistletoe” (a flirtation tune perfect for holiday parties) and “Christmas Tonight” (a duet with Lady Antebellum’s Hillary Scott in the style of the standard “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”). Whatever the topic, Barnes brings an intimate touch to the music that raises the album above typical yuletide fare.

Christmas Comes Early!

I'm generally a very strict nochristmasmusicbeforethanksgiving person, but I simply cannot keep myself from listening to this album!!! Dave's pure talent mixed with the childish joy of Christmas music is a combination as unstoppable as Santa and his reindeer. I would certainly have no objections to meeting Dave at the mistletoe (although I cannot say that his wife would feel the same way...).

You will not regret buying this album.

A reason to bust out the Christmas music early...

I've never been compelled to buy a Christmas album - why own a CD full of songs that everyone has heard sung the same way plenty of times before? However, Dave Barnes has simply blown me away. It's sweet and genuine without being hokey, and it has a lot of character and personality that is typical of Dave Barnes' usual fare. The released track with Hillary Scott is a winner - I more or less melt when Dave starts singing the chorus.

Dave writes in his digital booklet that he thinks of Christmas songs in conjunction with memories, since you tend to experience a great deal of important things with important people during the season with these sorts of songs in the background. For me, this is an album that I can see being a part of this Christmas season and future ones - I want these songs playing at my cocktail party, with my family, or while I decorate the tree with my boyfriend. I could not be more proud to actually own a christmas album!

Dave Barnes sings us a Very Merry Christmas!

I love the Barnes penned melodies on this fantastic CD. His writing shines on the romantic songs "Meet Me at The Mistletoe" and "Holiday Made for Two". "Mary & Joseph" is a gem of a song- simple and heartfelt Barnes at his best. He has great help with background vocals throughout and everyone will love "Christmas Tonight" a duet with Hillary Scott. Buy this CD now- it's not too early for great Christmas music!
