Past masters

The Brit versions of the albums didn't contain some of the best-loved (by me) songs, like the wonderful three-part harmonied "This Boy", the jovial and infectious "The Ballad of John and Yoko" (recorded by John and Paul at a time when they supposedly were estranged -- that's Paul on the drums), and the incandescent Paul vocal on "Long Tall Sally", still to me the most exuberant, purely joyful recording they ever made, and maybe Paul's best rock vocal ever. There are others too. I find, going through this treasure-trove at last, that it isn't the Beatles' "best" songs that I want on my iPod: it's the ones I somehow didn't wear out the first time around. So many of them I can't listen to; it's as if the grooves in my own brain are used up by the ODing I did back in the day... but a few feel fresh, and make me think I'll hear new nuances with the help of headphones and the remastering. I'm also gonna seek out "I'll follow the sun" and "Two of us" -- not sure if they're on here. I already grabbed "Sexy Sadie", which has always seemed like a melodic drug to me. It's good to have the four of you back.

The Best Rock and Roll Band of all Time.

The Beatles put Rock and Roll like no other band has ever down in the history of Rock and Roll music....

Formed: 1957 in Liverpool, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s

So much has been said and written about the Beatles — and their story is so mythic in its sweep — that it's difficult to summarize their career without restating clichés that have already been digested by tens of millions of rock fans. To start with the obvious, they were the greatest and most influential act of the rock era, and introduced more innovations into popular music than any other rock band of the 20th century. Moreover, they were among the few artists of any discipline that...
