Album Review

The philosophical and musical battles between traditional jazz fans and advocates of smooth or "contemporary" jazz may continue to rage, but for younger musicians coming up, by now they probably constitute just a chapter of jazz history to be studied at, say, the New England Conservatory, where trumpeter/flügelhorn player Cindy Bradley matriculated. On Unscripted, Bradley seems to mock the jazz category controversies, combining with producer Mike Broening to create a varied album on which she gives the impression of traveling from club to club, or perhaps from one radio station to another, playing effectively with whomever she encounters. That's the import of the brief interludes between some tracks, after which Bradley turns up performing lively smooth jazz ("Massive Transit") or soul-jazz ("Deja Blue") or making like a session musician providing low-key accompaniment for a movie soundtrack set against strings ("Inevitable"). Actually, all of these are Bradley/Broening originals, though Bradley also takes on Wayne Shorter's "Fingerprints" and the pop standard "You Don't Know What Love Is." The current (if not "contemporary") jazz musician, she seems to be saying, must be ready to take on all assignments, and no matter the context, she solos imaginatively on her instruments throughout.

Incredible Sophomore Release.

I downloaded this album the moment it hit iTunes at 9 p.m West Coast time. I purchased Bloom the day it came out two years ago and it continues to be one of my favorite albums. Like many of her fans, I've been eagerly awaiting the release of Unscripted. I had heard the radio version of Massive Tranist and there were 30 second clips of the songs on Cindy's website. While the clips gave you a taste that the album was gonna be a good one, they by no means do this album justice. If you were not a big fan of the trumpet, this album will make you love the trumpet. This woman is definitely a talent and is up there with the Rick Brauns and Chris Bottis. Every song on the album including the interludes are well written and passionately executed by Cindy. It is also wonderful to have an album where the songs have some length to them and feature not only Cindy's trumpet but some great keyboards, sax play and guitar. The song Footprints pulls you in from the opening and keeps you engaged for 7:30. The two songs that follow, You Don't Know What Love Is and Lifted are equally as engaging as well as the rest of the album This album is a must buy for any Smooth Jazz lover. Keep up the awesome work Cindy!!!!

Drivin' music

Between Massive transit, Footprints, Deja Blue, and Pink Slip, the highway was never so fun to drive (and I mean *drive*). Could repeat this disc all day long- actually, I do. The Interlude tracks are fun, nice touch.

At long last

Been waiting a long time for the release of "Unscripted," but didn't expect something this powerful, this graceful, this transcendant ... they may need to create a whole new sub-genre for Cindy. Thanks to all! -- Daavik
