Sons of Thunder

Sons of Thunder

Sleeping Giant’s sophomore album makes good on its title, as most of these songs rumble like booming claps of stormy tantrums. If you didn’t stop and listen to the lyrics, you might miss the fact that Sleeping Giant are a Christian metalcore band. Despite an urban- themed title, “Gang Signs” is actually not about intimidating gesticulations from thuggish young men in oversized trousers. It’s about staying committed to one’s faith during persecution. With maniacal guitars, pummeling rhythms, and frontman Thomas Green’s throat-searing screams, the song sets a brooding tone while setting the stage for “No One Leaves This Room Sick,” a relentless rainstorm of bludgeoning beats and howling guitars — easily the album’s heaviest number. Things simmer down a bit on the title track, with intense lyrics that sing a call-to-arms like message, though more specifically human arms for embracing one’s enemy. In the middle of topical despair, Sleeping Giant pleas for humans to “overcome this world with love.” Ending on a more somber note, “He Will Reign” bookends Sons of Thunder with a heartfelt piano ballad.
