Composer Rachel Portman brought the same level of grace and gentle melancholy to her score for the 19th century Chinese drama Snow Flower and the Secret Fan as she did on previous, similarly themed efforts like Never Let Me Go, Grey Gardens, and The Cider House Rules. Portman's effortless blend of traditional Chinese folk music and modern classical is both stately and unassuming, resulting in the kind of cinematic listening experience that requires little knowledge of the source material to be enjoyed.
One of the best score 2011!
I smell Oscar!
A sure fire Oscar contender for 2011!
I'm here to say now that this score for 'Snow Flower and the Secret Fan' is utterly inspired and quite gorgeous!
This is my favorite score by Rachel Portman since her score for 'Chocolat.' In fact, I would even go so far as to say
that I like this score as much, or even more, than 'Chocolat.' This just might be Rachel Portman's finest work and film score to date. It really is THAT GOOD FOLKS.
I have been a BIG Rachel Portman fan for quite a while. Although I enjoy her scores from the last few years,
several of them weren't as high on my list as her earlier greatest works, such as 'Chocolat,' 'Benny and Joon,'
'The War of the Buttons,' etc.
It contains delicate, sweeping (but not corny) and ethereal, simple-yet intricately woven, heartfelt and downright emotive music. The main theme alone is worth the purchase price of the album! ('Lily Meets Snow Flower'). Yet, EVERY other track is just as good. Track's like 'The Secret Fan,' 'Letterbox,' and 'Snow Flower's Tears' are so deep and just too beautiful for words!
If you like Rachel Portman even a little bit, you really should buy this score. The WHOLE thing. It's amazing, in every respect! This score not only deserves an Oscar nod, it has a great chance of winning the Oscar as well. Utterly breathtaking and my favorite soundtrack (and music, period) of 2011 so far - by a long shot!
Every one of these songs is so moving. I put it on at night to fall asleep to. Wonderful.
