iTunes Review

Needtobreathe’s fourth studio full-length is the product of touring nonstop for two solid years while promoting 2009’s successful The Outsiders. With 2011’s The Reckoning, residual wanderlust can be heard from song to song as the South Carolina quartet traverses various musical styles like it's passing through different American states. After a subdued intro, “Oohs and Ahhs” rocks out with loud rootsy tones, as if the brothers Rinehart had been taking lessons from the brothers Followill (of Kings of Leon). (The incredible jam at the end does well to translate Needtobreathe’s live prowess.) “Drive All Night” is a similar standout, rocking with the emotional urgency of a Bruce Springsteen hit while retaining a youthful intensity on par with L.A. roots-rockers Dawes. Things simmer down in the somber ballad “A Place Only You Can Go,” one of the band’s best-penned love songs, before following with “Slumber,” a triumphant folk-rock tune that recalls Cat Stevens’ heyday.

Soothes & Excites the Soul

NeedtoBreathe's "The Reckoning" is one of those "listen to no matter what mood your in" albums that equally soothes the soul yet excites it at the same time. Long time fans of the band will not be disappointed as the tracks have a similar feel to the group's other hits, yet feel completely novel at the same time. With a playful mix of bluegrass roots and folk melodies, the album has just the right blend of upbeat and reflective songs. Definitely a satisfying answer to those who have been long awaiting the album after falling in love with the singles!

First off, this band is phenomenal. Their messages are as true as their passion for their music. Kings of Leon + Mumford & Sons + Frank Hurd + more southern rootsy awesomeness almost = NEEDTOBREATHE. I bet you $5 they'll be the "next big thing" in the world of music (they kind of already are opening for Taylor Swift). Shoot, I'll even put $6 on it! Bear provides beyond stellar vocals, the Rineharts songwriting is exceptional, and the cohesiveness of the band is remarkable. PS This is a band to see live that should be on your bucket list... before you stop breathing... We all NEEDTOBREATHE to survive! Keep it coming, boys! Keep singing the truth!

Honest music the way it should be. It doesn't get any better than these guys. Real musicians playing real music. Thanks.
