iTunes Review

The 2011 debut by Tennis, Cape Dory, came after the husband/wife team of Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore sailed the Eastern seaboard for half a year; that arrangement lent Cape Dory its breezy, beachy sound. For album number two, the duo put Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney to work in the production chair, and the results are as stunning as the debut. Their retro-inspired pop is a bit brawnier here, more emphatic and sure-footed. Using everything from '50s doo-wop inflections to warbly ‘60s organs, beach-party beats, and girl-group goodness, Young & Old is one aptly named work. Moore’s sweet and naturally pop-suited voice is the perfect accompaniment to surf-twang reverb (the fabulously catchy “Origins”), dreamy ballads (“My Better Self,” “Dreamy”), and Supremes-style girl pop (“Robin” and the Supremes-on-steroids “It All Feels the Same”). Songs like “Petition” deconstruct the sounds of ‘60s radio, with percolating piano, cooing background vocals, and a languid, dance-party rhythm woven into something sounding remarkably fresh.

Simple, but definitely not stupid.

the criticism that tennis is too superficial or simple is just a testament to their point. a band built on a sound and the simplicity that coincides. ballads and pop songs with a heavy dose of nostalgia and the happiness that comes of those memories. and for that they are a lovely band that is a refreshing listen! not everything has to be so conceptually deep and complex!

in other words, another lovely album from tennis!

"Tennis" has gained yet another fan!

This is northeast preppy intelligence and politeness mixed with beachy California vibe. I am literally just waiting for Juicy Couture to feature this song in their ad campaigns! A girl can hope!

Awesome followup

Tracks like 'Origin' and 'My Better Self' take Tennis to a new level, surpassing their outstanding debut. No simple feat.

Tennis are an indie pop duo comprising husband and wife Patrick Riley (guitar, keyboards, production) and Alaina Moore (vocals, keyboards). They met while students in Colorado, and after graduating college they bought a sailboat and spent seven months sailing along the Eastern Seaboard. Post-adventure, they moved back to Colorado, and after getting settled began recording songs that had a modern lo-fi feel but a sweet '50s pop heart. The songs were inspired by their trip and the discussions they...
