Room For Two: Licht Isn't Yamaoka, But That's Okay

I was skeptical at first. Daniel Licht? Sure, he's got some talent... but he's no Akira Yamaoka. How can this album measure up to the work of such a profound artist? Will it stay within the bounds of the series, or will it deviate too far?

Turns out I didn't need to worry. Licht is not Yamaoka, but he doesn't need to be, because his work is outstanding in its own right. The music on this album is just as atmospheric, unnerving, and emotionally charged as the work of Licht's predecessor. Licht uses less atonality, and his pieces aren't as industrial as Yamaoko's, but he makes up for this with eerie melodies and clever mixtures of percussion, effects, and instrumental riffs. I was very impressed, and I say this as someone with a Silent Hill-inspired tattoo.

Perhaps my biggest criticism is the minimal use of the "voice of Silent Hill", Mary Elizabeth McGlynn. She appears briefly in a couple of tracks, but only as ambient background vocals. I would've liked to hear more from her.

Despite the lack of McGlynn, this album shines like the gritty, filtered sunlight of Silent Hill. I highly recommend giving Licht a chance, even if you're a hardcore Yamaoka fan. Perhaps there's room for two brilliant composers in the Silent Hill universe after all.

Other tracks

Does anyone have a list if the other tracks that played in the radios throughout the game?

It's not anything like Akira's work, but it's just as good and at the least does the past scores in the series a favor.
