iTunes Review

Randy Newman's songs are full of double-edged wit, laced with just enough tragedy between the lines. If you don't listen carefully, you could mistake "Sail Away" as a patriotic song with a rousing gospel chorus—only it's sung by a recruiter on a slave ship. "He Gives Us All His Love" is, seemingly, a hymn—except it calls into question how much God really cares. And after all these years, nobody's written a better song about headwear as a fetish object than "You Can Leave Your Hat On."

Customer Reviews

His Best.

Rather, my personal favorite. Every song is right- from the sleezy You Can Leave Your Hat On, to the playful Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear: this is Randy at his peak, in his youth, doing what he does best, making use of a limited instrument: his voice. Highly recommended. So much so that Harry Nilsson sung several of thes, with Randy playin' piano for him. Now- if iTunes could simply turn the album cover ninety degrees to the left (that is to say: right-side-up), it'd look more professional.

Wonderfully Increadible

Wow, I never thought of Randy Newman as being such a wonderful songwriter (both lyrically and musically), just some guy who wrote movie music and had an unusual voice. This album proved me wrong, every song is a gem, but my favorites have to by Sail Away and the hilarious Political Science, which may be a lesson for our times. This album is a must buy for anyone who loves great music, especially first time listeners.

Gotta Love it

This is a great album. It includes my personal favorite, Politcal Science. Another fantastic one from Randy Newman.

An anomaly among early-'70s singer/songwriters, Randy Newman may have been slightly influenced by Bob Dylan, but his music owed more to New Orleans R&B and traditional pop than folk. Newman developed an idiosyncratic style that alternated between sweeping, cinematic pop and rolling R&B, which were tied together by his nasty sense of humor. Where his peers concentrated on confessional songwriting, Newman drew characters, creating a world filled with misfits, outcasts, charlatans, and con men. Though...
