iTunes Editors’ Notes

With a clean early punk sound not terribly removed from bands like Social Distortion and Gang Green, Texas’ own Riverboat Gamblers have been around just more than a decade, and their melodic but aggressive sound is at its best on The Wolf You Feed. After turning down the fury dial from “scorching hot” to “toasty warm” on their previous outing (Underneath the Owl), it’s nothing but good news here, with the energy level back up at the high end of the dial. Songs like “Bite My Tongue” and “Soliloquy” reek of garage fumes and recall The Hives or International Noise Conspiracy. A little slower and with a different flavor of swagger, “Comedians” and “Dead Eyes” are hard-hitting jabs of power rock, while tunes like “Good Veins” and “Blue Ghosts” are pristine examples of the Gamblers’ finely pointed, moshpit-focused punk rock. It's modern enough to sound new and exciting but clearly rooted in the best purveyors of the first wave. Producer/musician Ted Hutt (Flogging Molly, Gaslight Anthem), Mark Ryan (Mind Spiders), and engineer Stuart Sikes (White Stripes) all contributed their estimable skills to this fine collection.

Gamblers!

Good stuff

Fantasticness ...

... wrapped in anthemic joy, placed upon a pile of f*#k yes. Thank you.

Not for the Riverboat beginner!

This is the best representation of the Riverboat Gamblers live performance yet; which is a good thing. You can hear the feed back through the album and the feel the wall of guitars coming from stage right and left. Its complicated and sloppy at the same time. No two choruses or versus are the same. The songs are raw and well layered. The whole album is like sitting in own your own private practice session. "Gallows Bird" gives a nod to a Tom Waits - Big Time performance while the rest of the album would be a perfect soundtrack to a modern day 'Spaghetti Western'. The Gamblers have broken their own mold when they put out this album. This shouldn't be your first Riverboat album but its great for those that have followed their music and careers for some time. Killer!

Biography

Formed: 1997 in Denton, TX

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

The Riverboat Gamblers rocked their way out of the university town of Denton, Texas, in September 2001 with the "Jenna Is a No Show" 7". It's unclear how the vinyl sliver was able to effectively harness the sonic fury that the Gamblers' legendary UNT house party live act had become; nevertheless, an instant classic was born. A Tim Kerr-produced eponymous LP followed on Vile Beat; it poured a pint of whiskey on an already raging rock & roll fire. Led by the whooping vocals of Teko (Mike Wiebe),...
