Album Review

Pianist Bill Evans was one of guitarist John McLaughlin's early heroes so this Evans tribute seemed like a logical idea. Sticking to acoustic guitar, McLaughlin is joined by four other guitarists (along with the acoustic bass guitar of Yann Maresz) to create an unusual instrumentation that often sounds as full as a keyboard. The leader arranged ten of Evans's compositions and his own "Homage" for a largely introverted set of music that has a strong classical feel. McLaughlin lets loose a few times but more mood and tempo variations would have kept this from being such a sleepy and overly respectful session.

Beautiful Guitar Work on Great Bill Evans Tunes

This is a unique record in that it is the music of Bill Evans interpreted by 6 guitars (McLaughlin joined by the guitars of the Aighetta Quartet and acoustic bass.) It is a beautiful recording and features some great tunes, but it is, as the All Music reviewer noted on iTunes, very introspective and meditative throughout. It's not a record to listen to while making a long drive, let's say. But it is eminently listenable, and I would highly recommend it to those who love classical guitar, and those who want to hear the music of Bill Evans played in a fresh way. It shows one more side of John McLaughlin, who has done such an amazing variety of recordings in his career.

We will meet again

It is not only a beautiful arrangement, but the spirit of Evans's compositions is enhanced by melancholic sound of acoustic guitars. I think, the music of this album purposely creates the atmosphere of loneliness and remoteness, without being disturbed by other contrasting moods. Mr. McLaughlin created an unique sound of six guitars and most importantly a contemplation of eternal time, which does not end with the last piece on this album.
