It’s about time someone made a Sundance-endorsed documentary and catalog-skimming soundtrack about the strange-but-true life story of Sixto Rodriguez, a Detroit native who disappeared into a life of demolition work after releasing two cult records in the early ‘70s. They're cult records in the States, at least. On the Internet, Rodriguez's daughter discovered her dad's genuine star status in South Africa: his working-class-hero songs had become a platinum-plated voice of the '90s anti-apartheid movement. That’s when his long-out-of-print Cold Fact and Coming from Reality LPs received a proper CD pressing, setting the stage for Light in the Attic’s own reissue campaign in the U.S. more than a decade later. “Sugar Man” is a woozy psych-pop single with the same withdrawal symptoms as The Velvet Underground’s “Waiting for the Man.” It perfectly sets the scene of Searching for Sugar Man, raising the curtain on a best-of collection that’s split evenly between Rodriguez’s two studio albums. We’d get more into specific songs, but they’re all essential listening. This is the perfect dust-clearing companion to one of 2012’s most compelling films.
Just saw the movie, plays Portland tonight
The film is outstanding, go see it. He lives the belief that there are no small jobs. There is as much honor and art in how he has spent his life outside of the music business, if not considerably more, than if he would have lived the last 40 years as a celebrity. Hope to get in the door to see him live tonight. A simple life lived with no regrets and no need to show off. Seems unfathonable in a culture steeped in Paris Hilton, Donald Trump, and Jersey Shore. I am much happier aligning with the sensibility of Rodriguez.
Searching For Sugar Man
Having never heard of Sixto Rodriguez until i had the chance to see the documentary Seraching for Sugar Man, I just wish now in my teen years, I had heard this stuff. Writing is incredible, the style all his own. Absolutely incredible. Jose Feliciano voice, Bob Dylan arrangements mashed into one.
You have to get this!
Bob Dillon! You stole the spot lights back then ! Rodriguez it's your to to shine my friend!
I just heard the story on 60 minutes, I can't believe that we ignored such a treasure! What a waist of such incredible music! To the South Africans:" I salute you for saving the music of such a legend, if it was not up to us Americans would never hear it, and that would be a crime.., thank you"
And to you Rodriguez it's time to write and compose... !
