Editors’ Notes

Tim Maia lived a wild life. The late Brazilian singer/songwriter also created some fantastic music that married American R&B and Brazilian sounds in delightful ways. As a young man he spent some time in the United States before being deported on marijuana charges. LSD, membership in a UFO cult, dozens of law suits, and a flexible sense of time are also part of his story. The excellent comp Nobody Can Live Forever collects 15 choice cuts from the 1970s starting with “Que Belleza,” an absolutely killer track that finds Maia’s soulful vocals backed by horns, chattering percussion, and fuzzed-up electric guitar. The singer switches to English for songs like the cool cruiser “Let’s Have a Ball Tonight,” and “I Don’t Care,” which sports strings, vibraphone, and simmering organ. Clavinet stabs mark the excellently arranged “Bom Senso,” and the album closes with the twelve-minute-long “Rational Culture,” where Maia proselytizes for the cult he belonged to at one point. Whether you’re a believer or not, there is no denying that this jam is super funky.

I'm a sucker for these classics and having them finally available as Mastered for iTunes got me all jittery inside...

If you've never listened to Tim Maia before - this is undoubtedly the compilation for you. Maia's unique psychedelic twist on R&B gives his sound an amazing edge which makes these tunes a must have for any music collection.

Discover Tim Maia!

Tim Maia brings R&B/old school soul to Brazilian funk in an unprecedented way....rad compilation from (as far as I’m concerned) the king of Brazilian soul. Check out Brother Father Mother Sister - it may be one of my favorite songs on earth.

Big man, big sound, big record.

If you’ve ever wondered what a tab of acid sounds like, listen to “Bom Senso.”

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s

The father of Brazilian soul music, Tim Maia never hid his true nature from his fans, his prospective employers, or the law. Iconoclastic, ironic, outspoken, polemical (but always humorous), and openly addicted to cocaine and marijuana, he was known for lightheartedly missing appointments and even big-time gigs, and also for being boycotted by recording companies, major TV networks such as Globo, and other media that didn't swallow his disturbing presence. With his potent and flexible baritone...
