iTunes Review

Veteran R&B singer Bettye LaVette can sing anything she chooses, and on Thankful N' Thoughtful, she does just that. Producer Craig Street made no genre off limits and never demanded LaVette revert to R&B form. Instead, Bob Dylan's "Everything Is Broken" turns into a noirscape littered with dirty blues guitars and echoed rhythms. Just as producer Daniel Lanois recast Bob Dylan and Emmylou Harris as downtown hipsters (or is that uptown sophisticates?), Street gives LaVette a new playground of sound. The Black Keys' "I'm Not the One," Ewan MacColl's classic "Dirty Old Town" (in two versions, fast and slow), Sly Stone's title track, Tom Waits' "Yesterday Is Here," and Neil Young's "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" are brought together as songs with a touch of blues and rock 'n' roll. There isn't anything Ms. LaVette can't sing, and she finds new twists and turns in everything she approaches. The deluxe edition adds three bonus tracks, including a touching read of Paul Simon's "Old."

.."Fair Enough!"..Her new recording; "Thankful N Thoughtful!" should add more converts to the "Bettye Bandwagon!"-Been observing her hard-fought Comeback Career for a long time now; And "T n' T" is a giant step in the right direction!-What passes for R&B/Soul Music in 2012 is like processed cheese; "You can Eat it; But it just doesn't Satisfy!"-Performers like Bettye are "Throwbacks" to a grittier/funkier era; Like the great Chess/Atlantic/Mussel Shoales Artists: Aretha Franklin; Dusty Springfield; Etta James & Koko Taylor!-"Real Music For Real People!"-Contemporary artists like Adele & the late Amy Winehouse really did "Get It!"-You Have Simply Got To "Feel It!"-"Viva LaVette!"…by Grimmbo.

Soulful Sexy & Wise

Bettye is the voice of experience. Her songs are such a release and RELIEF from the mindless studio mixed vocals of the latest divas that have no real idea of what life can turn out to be When she sings "everything is broken" you feel it and her version of CeeLo Green's Crazy is a stunner. And the vocals and words on "old" is one that every woman that has hit 45 or older will relate to in light of the youth obsessed culture we're living in. Her voice should be a national treasure and it's a shame that more people don't know her talent LOVE all the songs and am in awe of this outstanding songstress! Buy this. You won't regret it and your soul will love it!

One of the few remaining greats still doing it right!

I've heard the name for years and years but until now hearing this voice, its shameful I hadn't before. This lady voice and style stand right up there with so many greats Aretha, Tina, Etta to name a few of the great R & B voices of my time but this lady can sing with so much pain and conviction. The musicans backing on this gem are also worth noting, just close your eyes and it takes you back to the 70's. One of the better blues offering of the year, just listen to that voice tear it up!

A perennial cult favorite in Northern soul circles, singer Bettye LaVette was born in Muskegon, Michigan, on January 29, 1946. Raised primarily across the state in Detroit, at 16 she cut her first sides for the local Lupine label, with a test pressing of the disc making its way to Atlantic Records. After signing with Atlantic, she scored an R&B Top Ten hit out of the box with her debut single, "My Man — He's a Loving Man," only to fail to reach the same commercial heights again. After one...
