Absolutely Delightful!

Stephen Sondheim is a God Of The Theatre, and he and Nathan Lane smiled on us with this 2004 production. Based on the play by Aristophanes, it was "freely adapted" by the late, great Burt Shevelove and Sondheim and premiered in the swimming pool at Yale University. It went unrecorded and remained largely unknown until it as "even more freely adapted" by Nathan Lane in 2004 for Lincoln Center. Sondheim added a lot of new material to the score, including the heartfelt ballad "Ariadne" which is a highlight of the show. In an age where Broadway orchestras are reduced to a handful of players and synthesized instruments, it's a pleasure to hear a full orchestra with no synths. The sound is crisp and clear, making it easy to enjoy the outrageous lyrics and melodies as bouncy as the title characters. There is another, earlier, concert performance of the score with Nathan Lane, but this is the definitive version. A must for theatre fans.
