Wise & brilliantly crafted songs, spun on a definite loom

In "Up the Hickory and Down the Pine," Shelly Colvin accomplishes what so few records these days attempt and even fewer accomplish: an album full of deeply rewarding songs filled with real emotional weight. After my first few listens, I found myself not only enjoying the brilliant writing here, but thinking about the deep pathos of each song. They re-enchant people who have wandered too far into the modern landscape with the idea that it might be time to come home. But there's a deep realism here too. These songs are also about both the amazing promise and the hidden destructiveness of "home." They're like Robert Penn Warren poems set to a gorgeous soundtrack.

Each tune stands on its own, like it has been spun on a definite loom of particular places and situations. Songs like "To the Bone" and "The Staying Kind" reveal our desire for an overcoming and persevering love – a desire sometimes thwarted by the indifference of the other. Others, like "Alright Now" and "Holding Steady" shine with the idea of faithfulness and commitment. Throughout, songs like "Wishing Well" and "Pocket Change" burn and smolder with the brilliant musicianship of guitarist Gibb Droll and Ken Coomer (formerly of Wilco).

This is definitely one of the standout Americana records of 2012.

What A Gem!

This album turned out to be one of my favorites. In my opinion it was a Top 10 album for 2012/2013.
