iTunes Editors’ Notes

Southern California indie darlings Local Natives deviate here from the comparatively unrestrained attack of their 2010 debut, Gorilla Manor. With help from co-songwriter and producer Aaron Dessner (who also plays guitar in The National), the primal rhythms and '80s post-punk angularity of their preceding recordings are noticeably absent. “You & I” sets an exhilarating mood with wispy washes of guitar reverb, emotional piano parts, and pillowy bass thrums (which resonate in contrast to the pointedly plucked strings of their former bassist Andy Hamm, who left in 2011). “Heavy Feet” follows, with more intricate drum patterns and handclaps playing under dramatic keyboard lines and soaring vocals that have more in common with Grizzly Bear and Beach House. The handsome single “Ceilings” gets feathered out with a sonic shimmer that well displays Kelcey Ayer’s vocal versatility. Here he effortlessly segues from throaty croons to gossamer falsettos, à la Jeff Buckley. “Breakers” is another standout that’s washed in the warm oceanic swells of West Coast tones and harmonies.

Customer Reviews

Yes!

For what I've heard like their single it's gonna be sick

Just as good as Gorilla Manor

I shouldn't be surprised at how good this album is given that I've been a fan for a while and seen the guys perform live once already, but I'm blown away by this album! I was so happy to hear that they have more delightful music to offer.

A near flawless record that brought me to tears

I liked Local Natives' first album, but didn't love it. This is the most gorgeous record I've heard since Beach House's "Bloom." Every song flows so well together, and the vocal melodies work so perfectly with the instrumental.

"You and I" is the song that brought me in, but "Columbia" was the song that hit home with me emotionally, and sealed this as one of my favorite records of the past year. Don't listen to some of the bad reviews out right now - Hummingbird is an experience.
