Editors’ Notes

If you're a fan of Andrew Savage's other band, the duo Fergus & Geronimo, you're aware of his immense pool of wit and talent. With Parquet Courts, Savage enlists a handful of other Brooklynites in cranking out remarkably fresh-sounding post-punk that clangs and squawks on a wavelength right out of 1981, run through a filter of '90s Slanted and Enchanted–kissed indie rock. This stunning debut is packed with slashing guitars (which gut open the bellies of tunes like "Donuts Only") and bracing waves of crashing cymbals (which nudge along squalling, tightly interlaced guitars on songs like "Yr No Stoner"). Savage and pals yelp about things like empty pockets, cultural de-evolution, and slacker ennui, all in a surprisingly pointed and poetic manner. "Master of My Craft" and "Borrowed Time" capture the essence of early punk with masterful, raw minimalism. The only tune more than three minutes long is the hilarious "Stoned and Starving" (should he choose Swedish fish or licorice?); it's a heady Velvet Underground/Can/Sonic Youth musical elixir. Sublime.

Parquet Courts' special breed of "Americana punk" began in 2011 when some former Texans who had relocated to Brooklyn began practicing and gigging regularly. The band was centered around Fergus & Geronimo songwriter Andrew Savage, and also included guitarist Austin Brown, bassist Sean Yeaton, and drummer Max Savage. Much like in Teenage Cool Kids, the band Andrew Savage still split his time with back in his hometown of Denton, Texas, Parquet Courts produced noisy indie rock with jagged punk edges...
