The fourth album in the American Recordings series that comprised Johnny Cash’s comeback was the last released during his lifetime. It’s no coincidence that The Man Comes Around is the most poignantly elegiac of those releases, with the rumble-toned troubadour transforming such unlikely source material as Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” from an angst-filled alt-rock stomp into a hushed acoustic requiem for all he holds dear. These stripped-down statements from deep within Cash’s indomitable soul are impossible to shake off—not that anyone would want to.
A once in a lifetime artist realizes this is his last piece if work and he uses it to deliver us there in music genius.
No matter which Cash you pick young or old, you can't miss. The last albums produced with Rick Rubin are some of the most intimate life and death affirming collections arranged. They leave an indelible mark on one, prompting you to contemplate and review the integrity of your life. These songs have staying power and are instant classics. Highly recommended.
I don't even like country music, but these songs are done so beautifully. Hurt and the title track give me chills to listen to, as the sound of age and experience in his voice strikes some strange chord with me. Awesome album.
