iTunes Editors’ Notes

Though his long career has sent him in different directions, Boz Scaggs always returns to the sweet soul music that's closest to his heart. Here, drummer Steve Jordan gathered The Memphis Horns, bassist Willie Weeks, guitarist Ray Parker Jr., and keyboardist Spooner Oldham to Willie Mitchell's Royal Recording Studio in Memphis, and in three days they cut this exemplary soul album. The late Willie DeVille's "Mixed Up Shook Up Girl" slides in perfectly near Al Green's "So Good to Be Here" and Moon Martin's "Cadillac Walk," which had been covered by DeVille's band Mink DeVille back in 1977. "Rainy Night in Georgia" is given a slow, orchestrated performance that brings out the song's pathos. The folk and blues chestnut "Corrina, Corrina" also gets a thoughtful and restrained interpretation that shows off the nuance in Scaggs' phrasings. Having toured in recent years with Michael McDonald and Steely Dan's Donald Fagen, Scaggs eases into the Dan's "Pearl of the Quarter." The best thing to do with a great singer is let him sing a great song.

Top-notch Boz

Boz is back, doing what he does best - the blues! Anyone who has seen the man play live knows that he's most at home playing the music he grew up with, the music that obviously fills his soul. Since 1997's 'Come On Home' I've longed to hear Boz return to his roots. 'Memphis' is all of that and more - the man and his music are one, his life as a legendary musician and performer is heard in every intonation of his smooth, silky voice and his heart-felt guitar playing. Listen for yourself, and thank the man for sharing so much of himself with his listeners.

unchanged yet current!

Wow, not too many artist still have the voice, the songs that made them special and moved with they times. Here is a perfect example. This is absolutely refreshing. Great job Mr. Scaggs! you are unique and rare to accomplish this.

Boz is the Best!

Previewed the new collection of songs and they sound great. The smooth, vibrant, sound that Boz Scaggs fans love is evident in this album. I saw him perform in Austin, TX with Michael McDonald and could have listened to him the entire night. His voice sounds great and performing his hits reminded me that I've been a fan for over 30 years. I've got tickets for his April concert and can't wait to hear him perform the new material. MIxed Up, Shook Up Girl is a perfect fit for his voice and will become a Boz classic. He also does a great job covering Rainy Night in Georgia, Pearl of the Quarter... I'm so thankful that I'll be able to add terrific, new selections to my much-loved Boz favorites. Loved Memphis and look forward to spending time enjoying great music.
