iTunes Review

Darker in mood and grander in scope than the neon jungles of Contra, Modern Vampires of the City puts Vampire Weekend in league with Sgt. Pepper’s–era Beatles: a smart, musically omnivorous rock band-turned-studio-project trying to bottle lifetimes of worldly understanding in a 45-minute album. With help from co-producer Ariel Rechtshaid (Sky Ferreira, Haim, Brandon Flowers), the band joins mutant rockabilly (“Diane Young”) with music-box ballads (“Hannah Hunt”), choral music with reggae (“Ya Hey”) and punk with Celtic reels (“Worship You”). And as dense as the sound is, the overall impression somehow remains breezy, charming, and smart—philosophy you can blast at the bar.
