iTunes Review

Marshall Chapman has been making music since the '70s, and the South Carolina singer is still in fine voice and sticking with what she does best. A Bo Diddley beat greets the Todd Snider duet of "Love in the Wind," while a slashing Rolling Stones shuffle keeps up her cheeky side for "I Don't Want Nobody." Two covers—Hoagy Carmichael's "Nearness of You" and The Delmore Brothers' "Blues Stay Away from Me"—showcase her natural talents. They also give her band (Will Kimbrough on lead guitar, Casey Wood on drums, and bassist Jim Mayer) a chance to catch their breath from originals that range from the silly "Call the Lamas" to the serious dimming of the light on "Not Afraid to Die," where she figures she's lived past all the expectations she put upon herself in the title track. "Let's Make Waves" takes a country gallop with additional keyboards from co-producer Mike Utley. "Dreams and Memories" evokes a dark, western ballad worthy of Tom Waits.

Blazing good album

As Scotty Moore said in his blurb:

I have loved Marshall for years, but this is a real work of art.
The band is small, you can hear every note from every instrument,
(thanks Mr. Mixer) the voice is enough on top to hear every
emotion in the words but not overpowering. In addition to the
mechanics of the CD, which sounds much more like we did at
Sun Studio in 1955 than something from Nashville in 2013,
the songs are just as good as I expect from Ms. Chapman.
I especially like the Bo Diddley-type opener, but every song
sounds good. This is one to put on and listen all the way through,
not just put one or two cuts on your I-Pod.

Very chill album

Good mix of tunes that DO NOT DISSAPPOINT. Definitely worth a listen!
