iTunes Review

Celebrating their 25th anniversary, Barenaked Ladies show that the spoils go to the survivors. Despite the 2009 departure of Steven Page—their lead singer and key songwriter—the remaining band members have stepped up to ensure they don't miss a beat. 2013's Grinning Streak takes the professional confidence of 2010's All in Good Time and moves a clear step forward. Ed Robertson, keyboardist Kevin Hearn, and Better Than Ezra's Kevin Griffin handle the songwriting while producers Howie Beck, Gavin Brown, and Bob Clearmountain lend expertise behind the soundboards. With that artillery, mainstream-sounding pop songs like "Boomerang," "Gonna Walk," "Odds Are," and "Give It Back to You" seem like readymades for commercial radio, with the sort of harmonies that once made Paul McCartney take note. The band's sense of humor is still in the mix, but it's no longer a substitute for honest emotions. Few groups can handle losing their leader, but Barenaked Ladies come out the other side a markedly different—yet impressive—new band.

As summer as sweet tea and playing in sprinklers

The band doesn't plumb the emotional depths they do on their best albums, but as folk-pop goes, a lot of these songs are undeniably catchy, drive-with-the-windows down tunes. If "Odds Are" doesn't wind up being their biggest hit in years, then the listening public is tone deaf or their record company is terrible at promoting a single. "Daydreamin'" is a nice change of pace and probably Kevin Hearn's best song he's written and sung for BNL.

This album is simply perfect. BNL are back to their witty, catchy tunes. Highly recommended!

Not your dad's BNL

I've been a fan for many years and have all their albums (including For the Holidays, As You Want It and Snacktime!). Yes, I was very sad to see Page go, I get many others are still bummed about it. But All in Good Time and Grinning Streak are very solid albums. There may not be real green dresses, boom animé babes or shoeboxes. There was a time for that, and now there's a time for this. There are now more love songs than goofy stories or depression undertones. Hey! Boomerang and Odds Are are classic BNL already. Smile could have easily been in Maroon! Oh, and if you really miss Steve Page so much (admit it, we ALL do), then won't you support him and get his solo albums? They're pretty great and strangely BNL-y!

By combining humor with an eclectic mix of folk and pop/rock, the Barenaked Ladies enjoyed considerable popularity in their native Canada before rising to international status with 1998's "One Week." Vocalists Ed Robertson and Steve Page launched the band in the late '80s as an acoustic act, traveling to different college campuses and playing warm-up gigs for comedy troupes. These early shows played an important role in the group's foundation, as Robertson and Page began injecting their performances...
