iTunes Editors’ Notes

The album cover's rose of the same name ended up a perennial Dead trademark, but more to the point is how American Beauty's title sums up its ethos. After capturing its freewheeling impulses on the likes of Anthem of the Sun, and Live/Dead, the band reeled it all in for a controlled cohesion that allowed the players to nail down what might be their most gorgeous album. (Its acoustic instrumentation recalls nothing so much as the Band's then-recent self-titled set.) "Box of Rain" and "Ripple" were philosophical gems whose reassurances went far beyond hippie talk; the latter's play with blues and gospel iconography put the song at nice odds with theDead's outlaw mythos. Elsewhere, there's praise fora "Sugar Magnolia" who "pays my ticket when I speed," and the eternal "Truckin'," a strong bemused glance at the road life and its hazards. The remastered sound reveals one of the most crisply recorded outfits of its era.

The Best

I bought this on eBay, because according to family friends and Freaks and Geeks this is the best one and it always puts a stressed person in a good mood. After going to my fourth Gathering of the Vibes, I was excited to get some more Grateful Dead, and this album is just perfect

Perfect

This album may be the best Grateful Dead album, all the songs are perfect. This album just puts me in the best mood. This is a must for all deadheads!!!!! Deadheads Unite!!!

A Masterpiece!

A true studio masterpiece. My favorite of the bluegrass driven GD albums, created in a moment when the band starts to explore studio production and vocal harmonies along side contemporaries Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young, the Mommas and the Poppas, and others. An incredibly textured and moody album. One of my favorites from any band any time.

Rock's longest, strangest trip, the Grateful Dead were the psychedelic era's most beloved musical ambassadors as well as its most enduring survivors, spreading their message of peace, love, and mind-expansion across the globe throughout the better part of three decades.
