iTunes Review

Basia Bulat’s smartest move was enlisting the help of Tim Kingsbury of Arcade Fire and Mark Lawson, the GRAMMY-winning engineer of the Fire’s album The Suburbs. By locking in two people further out from her usual folk style, she ensured herself an album that would be like no other in her catalog. If purists turn their noses up at the upbeat pop frills of “Promise Not to Think About Love,” it’s unfortunate, since like many of the songs here, the additional backup choruses and bouncy grooves make that track practically irresistible. Besides, she’s shown her quirky side all along (2007’s “La-Da-Da” anyone?), and she did let her former producer, Howard Bilerman, alternate mixes with Lawson. She still communes with her autoharp on the soaring, birdlike “It Can’t Be You.” And the strength lurking in the honest and vulnerable “Paris or Amsterdam” is a work of palpable grace under pressure.

If you've never listened to Basia before, you're missing out on what I believe to be the greatest musical talent there is. Her first two albums before this were untouchable, and I was lucky enough to hear some of these new tracks live recently. I'm certain that this work is on par with all the greatness she's created already. Essential tracks include "Tall Tall Shadow" and "It Can't Be You".

Digging it

She sounds a lot more passionate and mature on this album. She's a great find. Definitely recommend it so far

Lyrical, melodic bliss

Basia Bulat is that rare artist whose music is both uplifting and heartbreaking.

Tall Tall Shadow is that rare album which both shows artistic growth, and retains the elements that made her previous work such a delight.

Thank you so much for for ten more soul stirring songs!

Canadian singer/songwriter Basia Bulat became one of the indie world's most talked about newcomers with the release of her first full-length album, 2007's Oh, My Darling. Originally from Toronto, Bulat later resettled in the quieter community of London, Ontario, where she recorded a self-released EP in 2005. Her rich, expressive voice proved to be the ideal vehicle for her songs, which dealt with love and life with a combination of sadness and wonder, and her melodies were bolstered by a band that...
