EDITORS’ NOTES

After winning both Best Indie Act and Best Folk Act at the 2013 Austin Music Awards, Wild Child had much to live up to on its second album, 2013’s The Runaround. Fan Ben Kweller stepped in to produce and supplement the duo’s sound after its largely ukulele-and-violin debut album, Pillow Talk. A number of local musicians built out the duo’s ranks to a full sextet, with drums, electric bass, keyboards, and cello adding structure and warmth and ensuring that songs like “Crazy Bird” and “Coming Home” have an accessible sound. This shift doesn't feel like a gimmick; it seems as if two fine, mature singer/songwriters—Kelsey Wilson and Alexander Beggins—are coming into their own with new friends. “Stitches” plays up Wild Child's homespun charm with a wordless sing-along that’s perfect for a campfire. “This Place” and “Left Behind” even capture a reflective, somber mood. This is a melodic group that still has room to grow over the years.
