iTunes Review

Paul McCartney’s first album of original material in six years lives up to its NEW title. Recorded in part at London’s Abbey Road Studios and with a fleet of top-notch producers, from Mark Ronson (Amy Winehouse) and Paul Epworth (Adele) to Ethan Johns (Kings of Leon) and Giles Martin (son of Beatles producer Sir George Martin), NEW pulses with current energy and legendary talent. Coming after the sunset-feel of 2007’s Memory Almost Full and a 2012 album of traditional pop and jazz standards (Kisses on the Bottom), NEW isn't the sound of a 71-year-old rocker but of a vital musician hitting his spots. Aside from the Beatles history lesson of “Early Days,” McCartney focuses on a musical authority and melodic sensibility that’s timeless and up to date. A sense of psychedelia filters through tracks like “Save Us,” “Alligator,” “New," and “Everybody Out There,” along with a sense that he’s only getting started. The deluxe edition adds two bonus tracks, including the excellent “Turned Me Out.”

"New" McCartney - How Cool Is That?

I don't care if this song isn't the next "Yesterday". (Or even the next "Mumbo".) At 71 years old, he's still blessed with a sense of melodic invention that boggles the mind. (And the harmonies that end the song - before the 2nd ending - are stunning.) Folks, who knows how much "New" McCartney we have left down the road. The fact that he's still releasing quality music is a gift which anybody who appreciates great music, and the Beatles vast and never-ending legacy, should not take for granted. Listen to what the man says, indeed.

Great Song

The new single is very beatle-istic. It sounds like it could've been taken from revolver. Short, sweet and to the point. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

Very Revolver

Penny Lane meets Good Day Sunshine….a wonderful trip back to where he once belonged. An immediate toe tapper. How can you not marvel at this man? His talent for creating licks is astonishing. This is why he is the most successful composer in modern history. And he did not have to pervert himself on MTV to shill his wares. All you need is love…and talent. Enormous talent.

Genre: Rock

Out of all the former Beatles, Paul McCartney by far had the most successful solo career, maintaining a constant presence in the British and American charts during the '70s and '80s. In America alone, he had nine number one singles and seven number one albums during the first 12 years of his solo career, and in his native United Kingdom, his record was nearly as impressive. McCartney's hot streak began in 1970, when he became the first Beatle to leave the group. A little more than a year after the...
