New album/beautiful old sound

If you know Scott Miller (in his many iterations), you get idea. Clever, thoughtful, brooding meets cheery, loving and felt songs. He's done it again. You won't find a harder working man in the music biz...certainly worth spending some time with this great new recording

Back to the old

This brief, rich album is 10 simple, sweet songs that have much more to say than the lyrics would have you believe. Scott Miller always connects you with feeling and place, and this album is no exception. "How am I ever gonna be me?" is a warm and thoughtful lullaby to self-awareness and life choices. "I can't go back to Her Love Anymore" is a fiddle and harmony delight. There's a steady urgency and loss in "Freight Train Heart/Stone Wall Love"; the song sounds just like the name suggests, and it's brilliant. A bright spot is "Heavy on my Mind", which echo's the V-Roy's sound. Much of "Big Big World" finds Scott contemplating his place in life, love, belonging and home. In this way, I found this album closer to "Thus Always to Tyrants" than previous efforts. There is a subtle bleakness to this album, but it's not unwelcome. The gorgeous "Goin' home" is pure Scott Miller, by which I mean, if Appalachia has a voice, surely she sounds likes this.

The youngest of three children born to a Pennsylvania Dutch father and a mother from the Deep South, Miller was born...
