iTunes Editors’ Notes

Canada’s long-running alt.country band—they were alt.country before the term existed—Blue Rodeo celebrate more than 25 years of ups and downs with their 13th album, In Our Nature. It was recorded at co-founder Greg Keelor’s farmhouse, just as the band’s classic 5 Days In July album had been done 20 years earlier. Keelor’s well-publicized hearing problems have kept him off the electric guitar and prompted the addition of new members (guitarist Colin Cripps and keyboardist Michael Boguski), but they haven’t curtailed the chemistry he has with songwriter Jim Cuddy. The songs carry a certain mortality closer to the front lines than previous albums, but the harmonies on “New Morning Sun,” “Tell Me Again," and “Mattawa” add color. The heartfelt, quieter moments of “Wondering,” “In Our Nature," and “Out of the Blue” take the group into poetic territory where a pedal steel guitar opens the landscape and gives the songs a shade of Gene Clark’s melancholia.

Customer Reviews

Wow, I get to be the first U.S rater of this fabulous Canadian band!

Saw this on the Canadian iTunes site recently and could not find a way to purchase it - need a Canadian credit card. Insanely, I kept looking for it on the US iTunes store, and it appeared one day - I guess persistence sometimes pays off.

Good timing on this release as a relationship I had with a gal from near Toronto just ended. These guys produce a fantastic album with songs many of which a number seem to speak directly to my previous relationship. New Morning Sun in particular expresses sad sentiments on the ended affair. Will definitely be seeing them in Vancouver in January 2, 2014 - what a way to start a new year!

Oh, by the way, these guys are fantastic musicians - if you love good harmonies and music with a twang and some piano you’ll love this album.

We love Blue Rodeo

Another masterpiece from Blue Rodeo. The easiest listening music you will ever find. My fiance and I fell in love with each other with their beautiful music in the background. I have given their music to many people and they all love the Rodeo. Years ago Rolling Stone said "the best new American band might be from Canada." I still believe this.

Great Music!!

I have almost everything BR has done and this is one of the best. What a talented band, it's a shame nobody in the US has ever heard of them. The songs flow together well on this one and tho I've only listened twice it's a winner! Not a bad song in the bunch.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Canada's most popular roots rock band, Blue Rodeo, became a veritable institution in their home country, although they never quite moved beyond cult status in the U.S. Their sound was a basic blend of country, folk, and rock, but with a definite pop appeal that underlined their devotion to later-period Beatles, in addition to expected touchstones like Gram Parsons, Bob Dylan, and the Band. Consistency was the hallmark of Blue Rodeo's output, both in terms of sound (which followed much the same blueprint...
