Album Review

Veteran film composer John Debney (Passion of the Christ, Elf, Iron Man 2) again shows his range on the soundtrack to A&E's Bonnie and Clyde mini-series. Drawing inspiration from both the dustbowl folk and vibrant jazz of the 1930s, Debney's robust score captures the excitement, drama, and desperation of America's famed bank-robbing sweethearts. Threaded throughout the heartland dobro picking and swing-era trombones are the creaking, ambient sections and big orchestral bursts befitting a Hollywood production of this type. Although he takes some liberties with the modern, percussion-driven "Main Titles," Bonnie and Clyde is truly a period piece, and Debney treats the subject respectfully, staying true to the vintage aesthetic while adding just enough contemporary flourishes to please a modern television audience.
