Album Review

After over 30 years of legal wrangling, the inspirational genius of Jimmy Scott has been re-released by master producer Joel Dorn on an album that is as beautiful and strong today as it was when it was recorded for Ray Charles' Tangerine Records. The lyrical links of "Unchained Melody" are absolutely righteous and the strains of "Exodus" could lead a listener to cry the Red Sea or to part it. While "Motherless Child" aches with orphaned loneliness, "Our Day Will Come" is confidentially encouraging. For over 40 years, Scott's frankly feminine registers, delayed deliveries, easy shapings, and full-soul bellows have been a source of inspiration and style for everyone from Nancy Wilson to k.d. lang, and this collection carries that legendary legacy into the 21st century.

jimmy the greatest!

i LOVE this album. can't help but hear his influence in singers like Nancy Wilson and Eddie Skuller, among others!

This is Jimmy Scott in his prime. He is, at the time of this recording, a seasoned, mature, and exceptional vocalist well in control of his unique instrument. He knows that he is turning your soul inside out with every phrase or tone. You want to cry because we were deprived of his talent for so many years because of legal problems. This rare gem is cushioned between the early recordings which could be penetrating to the point of annoyance and his current recordings which are, unfortunately, beginning to show his age. On this recording, he is poised for a brilliant career he did not receive until much later in his life. This recording is a timeless treasure, a snapshot of a vocalist poised to take his first step into mega-stardom on the world stage, who instead had to wait decades. An additional comment. The musical arrangements for these songs is meticulous. Lovely piano arpeggios, a sax solo, gentle guitar chords, the lilt of a flute, the tension of strings....all seem like magic to weave in and out of the songs. It was brilliant to begin "Motherless Child" acapella! Perfect!

The Best Jimmy out there

If you're looking for not only a great introduction, but also the most enduring work of this great artist, this is the set to get. Day By Day is a masterpiece of vocal use of space and emotional content. Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child, This Love of Mine, and I Wish I Knew are also standouts here. The sound is pretty good considering when it was recorded, but Jimmy's voice and style is the star here. For a newer set, look up All The Way - a fine album with great players, and exceptional recording value. I saw Jimmy in Philadelphia in the late 90's, and it was an honor and a treat. Enjoy.
